Be a responsible cat owner

Enjoy and protect your pet cat while looking after Auckland's natural environment.

Cats are much-loved companions, but they can pose a serious threat to native wildlife if not managed carefully. Responsible cat ownership helps protect native birds, bats, lizards, frogs and insects, while also keeping your cat safer and healthier.

Care for your cat responsibly

Cats are happiest and healthiest when their movements are managed and their needs are met at home.

  • Desex your cat to prevent overpopulation.
  • Keep your cat indoors at night and on your property as much as possible.
  • Play with your cat frequently — regular play has been shown to reduce hunting behaviour by meeting their physical and mental needs.
  • Use a bell or bird-safe collar so potential prey can hear or see your cat approaching.
  • If your cat goes outside, feed a high meat diet to help reduce its urge to hunt.
  • When you go on holiday, leave your cat at home with a trusted cat-sitter or use a cattery. Never take your cat on holiday, especially to offshore islands or near parks, reserves or coastal areas.
  • Rehome your cat responsibly. If you can no longer care for your cat or kitten, never release it into the wild. Instead, find a responsible new owner or contact a cat rescue centre.

How your choices make a difference

Free-roaming cats are a significant cause of wildlife decline. By managing where and when your cat roams, you help reduce pressure on native species and protect ecosystems that are already under stress — while also reducing risks to your cat from traffic, fights, other animals and pest animal control traps.
